Tennant Cotton is BACK!

Hey guys,

I received a tip yesterday that Magnoli has more "Tennant" cotton back in stock.
It is still regrettable $60 a yard. You need 5 yards for a suit so you are still looking at spending $300.
Of course if you are are ordering the Brown suit, it might be cheaper to have it made by Magnoli.
Although I am not convinced by his tailoring...

The Blue cotton can be dyed, but this is an awfully expensive project.
But, it can be done as seen here.

Still working on my own blue suit machinations and will have to wait for more funds to accumulate, since I just ordered some new footwear. You know what I mean...

UPDATE:

So Magnoli is offering a new shade of blue for the Blue Suit, "Teal with Rust red stripes"

The top being the new brown, (who knows how it compares to the old factory production)

This is allegedly the new teal fabric.

And the old light blue that people have bought for dying purposes.

I don't know, what do you guys think?

Press your Luck

Well known and highly regarded as a legendary look is Tennant's outfit for Tooth and Claw.
We now have Magnoli who makes a replica FCUK shirt.
And the brown suit is somewhat available. Checking in at H&M in hopes of finding a slate grey shirt is chancy.
But the real trouble is getting the right thermal henley that the Doctor wears, only in this episode...
(Or does he?)

Well I know Risu has recommend this shirt from American Apparel before and I decided to give it a try:
Baby Thermal Long Sleeve Henley

Shipping to me was FAST. AA has a plant in Montreal. I got it today, and immediately went out to get some snap fasteners. I know my last attempt was a simple brown shirt with capped fastener. I only resorted to those because they didn't sell the tool I needed and I wanted to get that look underway.

And this is what it looks like:

However I am now rethinking my choice of shirt. I bought this shirt on eBay, it being listed as "slate-blue" like the real shirt. It is indeed slate blue, just a light shade. I decided that it was now time to experiment with all the other possible combinations:

Allons-y!

I tried the navy shirt, but it just isn't the same, then it donned on me to give the new Girl in the Fireplace shirt a try, because of it's mysterious blue/green color that no one can really define:

And BAM! We're off the the races.
Ladies and gentlemen, I think this shirt, the GIFP is a definite winner. I would add the pick-stiching to it but I only have the one and I really can't afford to muck it up. I think this shirt has come and gone at Banana Republic so it's the only one I'll probably ever have. I know Risu planned on dying his to the correct color seen in GITF.

So I decided to get a bit creative and try something new-ish. I say ish because Tennant did wear a fairly plain shirt in Fear Her (along with BLACK converse, FYI)

I had to trade the slate blue for the Navy H&M tee, which goes much better with it. At least you can see the detail.

Oh yes, about the times that this look appears, lets hope you are all avid Doctor Who fans and know your episodes inside-out:

Hmm what's this? A shot from Blink, when the Doctor and Martha meet Sally Sparrow for the first time.
Not only that by the style is different! He wears his jacket with the second button done up. If you recall, Tooth and Claw was only the third button.
So he wears it twice, now you know!

Please let me know what you think, and if there are any more Tenth Doctor looks/combinations you would like to see me try out.

Until next time,

7&10 out!

Brown suit ties- In Depth

-WORK IN PROGRESS-

I wanted to present the ties by themselves now, so that people could see them without the suit. They have their own unique personality, all have whimsy, all say TIME LORD.
I tend to refer to them by their original maker in regards to the show, however since there are some designer overlap, I will distinguish similar ones by pattern.

Also I am only going to be covering ties that go with the brown suit. As of this moment I don't believe that anyone has a perfect replica of a Blue suit tie. There is of course the difference between the replica ties which are screen accurate on most accounts, and next best alternative ties. Of the possible 12 ties that David Tennant wore in his run as the 10th Doctor 4 can be easily accessed. (The fourth being the Duffer tie, although it is not the correct color)
However as time goes on and styles change, trying to find suitable stand-ins grows harder and harder.
Thus some ties are canon and some are good stand-ins for the real thing.

I am listing them in order as found in Steve Ricks tie-index.

To find a match close enough to the tie worn in Tennant's first full episode I think this proves a reasonable substitute.

The First canon tie going in order according to the tie-index is the Daniel Hetcher tie.

The second canon is the Christian Lacroix tie.

This of course is the stand-in for the Thomas Nash tie
The third is the Giorgio Armani tie.

The Fourth Tie is the St. George by Duffer tie.
On the net it might be called the Duffer tie or the Utopia tie.

And the Partners and Crime spot, which was a Massimo Dutti tie, is being held by this tie. I think I did rather well. It wasn't easy finding a light and dark blue striped tie in brown.

Duff's the Stuff!

Right-o! After a two week wait, I finally have my own St. George by Duffer tie, as seen in Utopia, The Sound of Drums and Last of the Timelords

This entry is dedicated to CorriTimigan who asked me to take lots of pictures and I humbly obliged

Now excuse me while I review this tie and its counterparts in detail:

First of all I think we all remember Magnoli's Utopia Tie, seen here in a golden color. The actual Duffer tie is quite dark, in some light it even appears black. It is a very rich chocolate brown as most of the Brown Suit ties are (should be)
The blue in the floral design is washed out, not due to lighting but the main color of the tie is so light that it doesn't stand out as much.

As you can see it is really quite striking when matched with the dark blue shirt. I know I paid through the nose for this tie, $350.00. But at least I can admit it.
In my mind this tie is a piece of 10th Doctor History, I will treat it with the awesome respect it deserves.

The much darker tie makes the floral design really pop.
And the blues in it are much more enhanced.

I wish I could review more authentic Tennant ties, and take a bazillion pictures for salivating fans, but for now these will have to do:

UPDATE Dec 7th 2011: By request: FourKnocks wanted me to take a picture with the jacket open, a la the aged Doctor as he emerges from his tent in The Last of the Time Lords.
So, here it is:

                                                        -----------------------------------------
But at this point I want to call another tie to the floor,

Fourth in Steve Ricks alternatives is this other tie, in a mysterious brown on brown with repeating floral motif. He displays with the pale blue shirt, I've only worn this tie with the dark blue.
I was quite curious to see how the two Duffer ties would compare to each other and to the Magnoli replica.

I have taken a many pictures so bear with me,
Now I knew that the alternative Duffer tie was what I would call a medium width tie, not a skinny tie, but it is certainly slimmer than the actual Duffer.

Now I took pictures of both the Magnoli tie and the Duffer tie for people who were interested:

Up first is the real, authentic St. George by Duffer
And yes FourKnocks I will try to get a scan of this for you.

I've put them side-by-side here so you can see how close the pattern is, it is very exact. Even the ribbed silk on is exact.
The Duffer is on the left and Magnoli's on the right.

And the Magnoli Replica:

I wanted to announce that I am willing to part with my Magnoli replica for anyone who wants it.
Please send a message to geekchicstyle@gmail.com and I'll get back to you.

Magnoli left, Duffer right

P.S.

I am planning on going through with having a blue Tennant suit made, as well as pattern chasing the enigma that is the Daleks in Manhatten tie. Or Tie Nine.

More 11

To keep with the general theme here of 7th and 10th Doctor clothing, I will try to combine all my 11th Doctor stuff into one gigantic post. Something like that...

This is one of my two 11ish blazers. I know it's not really screen accurate, but I feel it captures the feel of the look and so I wear it.

Well, I know many of us were chasing around looking for a blue 11th Doctor shirt. I of course went back to Banana where I spotted the correct weave and bought one.
I have on my wonderful Swagger and Swoon burgundy braces, which I must say are excellent!
Although it lacks the front button placket of Smith's own, I think this shirt does the trick, lets check the weave:

Yep, that's the right one.

And while I'm at it I will try to drum up some business for the eBay seller from which I bought my maroon bow tie:

Here's the LINK

Grab 'em while you can.

However, I should note that it sized HUGE, even at 14 inches it was massive, so I undid some stitching and shortened it so it tied a more reasonable bow tie.

Giorgi-OH!

At long last, my Giorgio Tie has arrived!

Now I am not quite sure if this new run of ties is from a new factory. This, and the Hetcher are both lighter than the LaCroix (Swirly) and Duffer (Utopia).
Here was Risu's comment on the weight,
"The original Armani tie is the heaviest tie I own, considerably more so than Magnoli's ties. They are still a nice      weight, though."

Thus, as Steve Ricks wrote in his review, this tie was based on the designs of the actual tie. This is as close as we're going to get on this one.
For Magnoli, who sometimes takes a few tries to get one spot-on, this was a bullseye.

Kept in suspense, brace for excitment

While I'm on the topic of 11th Doctors, I should cast a few kind works towards the Swagger and Swoon people.

I kept checking their site in hopes that the burgundy suspenders (braces) would come back in stock, since they are such a hot commodity, and as luck would have it they did have some in stock. They advertise these as Dr Who braces no less!

But I also ordered a pair of navy (well he wears those too!)
and black. (?)

Black? Yes, I tend to take my Time Lord fashion into the realm of everyday wear and I bought a plaid jacket in a grey color so the black braces are just the thing.
I'm not going for a nega-Doctor or anything, just a different sort of variation on what we've all seen.

Here are some other shots:

Not entirely an Odd Number (11)

So perhaps it should come as no surprise that while I like Tennant's Geek chic fashion because it is wearable, I also enjoy Matt Smith's taste in Time Lord apparel.

Arriving today were these beauties:

That's right I was part of pumpkiny's authentic Smith S6 boot run. WOO HOO
Believe me, it was worth it.

Here are some comparison shots I took with my Smith stand in:

As you can tell, they are quite a tall boot. The 11 eyelets go much father down the foot than a regular boot and they do not curve upwards the way most contemporary shoes/boots do.

If you are interested I suggest you contact pumpkiny, through his blog. These boots were made at a prop production company of the highest calibre, they went in with an order for other people's boots and were fabulously expensive.

These boots were especially made for me. I had to send in measurements. I was told my foot was short and broad so these boots came out especially shaped.

Here they are with my Doctor jeans, which are actually from American Eagle. They are a
Dark Rich Indigo Wash. I also have a pain in black, they are slim styled but this style has been discontinued in favour of a "Slim Straight" jean now in production.

                                                            Dare I say: Geronimo!

UPDATE: Nov 30th 2011

Now, having worn them I can say a few things:
First of all they are very comfortable to wear. They have the "action" sole on the bottom made of rubber so they are very quite, absolutely no clicking like a leather heel.
Because they fit close to the foot, I want to compare them to rock climbing shoes.
But they're boots...
To get in and out you must undo at least 4 eyelets down to get your foot in, only because they do up so high.

Duff Man!

This morning I was alerted to an eBay sale for 1 Duffer by St. George tie!

How exciting. But in the past I have been sniped at the last second. :(
Rather than live with long lasting disappointment I manned up and bought it,
thank goodness for the BUY IT NOW option.

I will let you know when it arrives, I am also expecting the Armani replica tie in the mail this week as some of us have already received it.

A Square Circle

It is finally in stock Tennant fans!

Magnoli has come through with this awesome looking, much anticipated, extremely elusive and stunningly whimsical Giorgio Armani replica.

Looks as though he made the announcement on the 7th of November on the RPF. Also saying that he was still working on the Ricci tie.

I pre-ordered mine a week or so ago, and now that he has a picture up on his site, I imagine that they will be shipping soon.  As soon as it is in my possession I will take some pictures and blog about it.

Exciting times!
